BATON ROUGE, La. (April 29, 2024) – Helix Community Schools recently launched a website for its Helix AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Medical Academy (Helix AIM) which is set to open in Opelousas, Louisiana in August 2025. 

The website features important information about the new school and what residents in St. Landry Parish can expect including its mission, curriculum, construction and upcoming plans.

“We’ve received lots of questions from people interested in learning more about the school so we’re excited to launch our new website to help keep residents informed,” said Jennifer Gordon, executive director for growth and opportunities and founding principal of Helix AI and Medical. “We plan to  add more information to the site as we continue to move forward.”

Helix AI and Medical is a public charter school that will offer classes for students in kindergarten through fifth grades, expanding to grades sixth through eighth in 2026. The goal is to add a grade level each year to become a K-12 school by 2030.  The 42,000 state-of-the-art facility will be located on 17 acres of land next to Our Savior’s Church off of I-49 which is a busy area with various businesses nearby including a medical facility.

The St. Landry Parish School Board approved the $34 million project in 2023. The school will be paid for by Helix at no additional cost to taxpayers.

Helix AI and Medical is designed to meet the future demands of technology and the medical industries. The curriculum will be rooted in artificial intelligence, medical and STEM with project-based learning and leadership development. 

“Our goal is to bring AI to Opelousas with a cutting-edge curriculum that will help prepare our students for the future,” said Preston Castille, president and CEO of Helix Community Schools.  “We also believe the school will spur even more economic development in the area so it’s a win-win for everyone.”

Officials recently opened an office in Carencro where Gordon and other staff will work temporarily while the school is being built. A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for this summer.
